Most poker novices learn to play poker at home. As a beginner, you would want a more controlled environment than what you would normally get in a land-based casino and an online casino. The difference between playing at home and playing in professional betting establishments does not end there. Most home games are relaxed and uncomplicated. Home games do away with much of the complexity encountered in professional gaming.
Perhaps the most important difference between home games and professional games is the use of the ante in the betting structure. Home games often incorporate a fixed ante. Players put up a small amount of sum in the pot before a single card is dealt. In casino games, antes usually come in the form of blinds. There is a small blind and a big blind. The first player from the dealer must put up the small blind while the player that comes after him is burdened with the big blind. All the other players don't have to put up blinds but before they can raise or call they would have to match the big blind. The first two players from the dealer are always forced to lose some money equivalent to the small and big blinds respectively.
The blinds will get to include the money they've already put up when the betting comes back around to them.
For example:
First Round
1st player: ($1) small blind
2nd player: ($2) big blind
3rd player: must call $2 ,raise or fold
4th player: must call $2 plus amount raised by 3rd player or fold
5th player: must call $2 plus amount raised by all preceding players or fold
Second Round
1st player: calls the last bet minus $1, raise or fold
2nd player: calls last bet minus $2, raise or fold, etc.
Most poker games in casinos and those in professional tournaments incorporate the blinds instead of the ante system excepting a few poker variation such as the seven-card stud. With the blinds system, positioning in a poker table becomes highly critical.
For instance, to even things out, the big blind is given the privilege to make an extra raise called a live blind. The big blind gets to raise even after the bet comes back to him with the same value to his bet. The big blind only has this option once in a given pot.
Stealing the Blind. One common strategy in professional games is to take away the blind before the blind players can make a move. This is called stealing th blinds. Stealing the Blinds is a great way on how positioning becomes very important in poker games played in casinos.
Assuming there are 7 players at the table. The first two players dealt by the dealer put up the small and the big blinds. Often the dealer would raise to get the blinds to fold even when he does not have a good hand. He will do this sometimes to scare the two blinds before they can even make a move.
Stealing the blinds are very useful for late positions at the poker table. It presents the lowest-risk gains and can improve the stack of a short-stacked player especially as the game progresses to bigger blind.
