 Betting the NFL

Nowadays different means of gambling are in full swing. With brick-and-mortar and online casinos springing up like mushrooms after rain, and the World Poker Tour enjoying a popularity like never before, almost every single person's life is touched – one way or the other- by some form of gambling.

Some people devise different poker strategies, others swear craps are the game to play and – quite surprisingly – they even come up with strategies for craps. The money-hungry sportsbettors though, they know all about casino games. They know about the house edge, and also about the fact that in the longrun, in games like slots and craps or roulette the house always wins and gets away with the edge. Generally with games based purely on luck players don't really stand a chance of ever breaking ahead of the house. Now other games, partly based on skill, like poker and sports betting are a different matter altogether. In online poker rooms different players clobber each-other with the house collecting the rake, but since you don't actually play against the house your chances to win are increased significantly.

In sports betting one does play against the sportsbook, however, by nature of the game the chances are pretty much 50-50.

The bookie makes up for this handicap by giving out the odds. One can't really expect to get the same amount of payout when the favorite wins a matchup as when the underdogs pull an upset.

NFL betting is the most popular with 'sharp' bettors. It has come a long way from simply picking a winner in a matchup.

These days bets can be placed on a lot of different things involving NFL games. From betting the spread ( trying to predict the winner when one of the teams is given a points handicap or to predict what the point difference between two teams is at the end of the game) through betting on the time of the first point scored to individual performances by different players there are a myriad of opportunities that can make even the dullest NFL game a heartattack – provided you have enough money bet on it on different knick-knacks. The fact that there are so many things to bet on can make for an excellent source of "hidden value" bets. While everyone, including the bookie concentrates on the actual result of the game one can make nice money on the sidebets nobody seems to pay any attention to.

It is a well known fact that making money on wildly popuplar matchups and results is quite difficult. The bookie will be sure to focus on these events and tweak the odds to near perfection, however events that the crow doesn't really care won't present much interest for the sportsbook either.

They're more likely to give out sloppy odds on such events, so one can see how the multitude of things one can bet on in the NFL clearly works against bookmakers.

Another novelty about NFL betting is live odds. Many internet based sportsbooks offer live odds on their sites and some live odds are even offered during televison broadcasts. Live odds are a particularly interesting thing about NFL games. One can actually bet on the game continuously with the odds changing as the game progresses. Very interesting moves can be made when the game-situatiation is just about to change. If one is fast enough to place the bet before the tide-turning event actually occurs he can bet with the old odds on a game that is heading into an altogether different direction than just a few minutes ago.

Many sharp bettors swear that there's good money to be made in betting the NFL line. 'Betting the line' means to actually go about things the old fashioned way. Simply bet on whether this or that or the other team will lose or win a certain game. In this case they recommend betting the underdog, after – with a thorough handicapping under their belt – one decides that the underdog indeed has chances of upsetting the fav. in the given circumstances. Betting on the fav doesn't really make any sense because noone really want to put 5 dollars on the line to win 2.

Whatever approach you decide to take, one thing is for sure: simply due to its complexity, NFL betting presents bettors with a such a large variety of opportunities to make money that breaking ahead of the bookie becomes indeed but a matter of handicapping.
